Tournament & Field đ
The seasonâs final Major is upon us as the 153rd Open Championship is just hours away from teeing off⌠but donât worry, there is still plenty of time to set your DFS lineups! This yearâs Open Championship will be held at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland, and weâll get to see all the big names in the golf world battle it out across the pond. The field of approximately 155 golfers will boast the absolute best talent that the game has to offer â 55 of the top 60 ranked golfers in the world will be in attendance. Plenty of other top 100-ranked golfers will be in the mix along with nearly 20 DP World Tour players, 18 LIV Golf competitors, several past champions, and a few qualifying amateurs. After 36 holes, the top 70 (including ties) will make the cut and move on to play the weekend. Note that this is slightly different from the usual âtop 65 + tiesâ PGA Tour cut rule.
Please remember that this event is in Northern Ireland, so play will begin and lineups will lock soon after midnight on the East Coast at 1:35 a.m. ET on Thursday, July 17th. As is the case with all Major events, DFS pricing is soft on both DraftKings and FanDuel; that may not apply to Scottie Scheffler, who is around $14,000 on both DK and FD, but youâll notice some generous pricing on plenty of highly talented golfers further down the list. Generally speaking, a balanced lineup is often ideal for cash games, but anything goes for GPPs. If youâre new to PGA DFS, I wouldnât recommend getting too cute with âpuntingâ a ton of super low-priced guys. With that said, there are plenty of cheaper golfers who will carry some appeal, some of which will be listed on my Open Championship cheat sheet below. Majors are set up to provide the most challenging tests that professional golfers see all year, and the cream always rises to the top. A few lesser-known players will certainly surprise on the final leaderboard, but well-known and vetted pros will far outnumber them.
Finally, I know we may get some folks testing the waters in PGA DFS this week since the MLB is on its All-Star Break, and there arenât really any other popular sports in action at the moment. Donât hesitate to ask some questions in the LineStar chat, and Iâll also try to make this newsletter as comprehensive as possible! Best of luck!
The Course Preview âł
Royal Portrush Golf Club
Par 71 | 7,381 Yards
Royal Portrush is back serving as the backdrop for the Open Championship for the first time since 2019, when Shane Lowry won by a score of 15-under. Lowry was the only golfer to reach double-digits under par that week, beating second-place golfer Tommy Fleetwood by six strokes. Itâs shaping up to be another tough test six years later. Sitting along the Northern Ireland coast, this 7,381-yard, par 71 course offers a mix of stunning scenery and tricky golf equations waiting to be solved. Unlike many links courses, Royal Portrush features some notable elevation changes, which can pose as extra hurdles for players not used to that kind of terrain.
The layout combines tight, challenging fairways with some big shots over scenic but tricky natural features. There are a few risk-reward holesâespecially the par 5sâwhere players can go for eagle or lay up safely. But with pot bunkers scattered across the fairways and thick fescue lurking, any mistake can quickly turn into a big number.
One of the most talked-about holes is the 16th, known as "Calamity." Itâs an uphill, 235-yard par 3 that crosses a deep chasm to reach a diagonal green. Missing left or right isnât just a small mistake â it can really torpedo a round. Itâs the kind of hole that forces players to be precise under pressure.
Weather is always a factor here. With cool temperatures, rain, and gusts common on Irelandâs coast, players will need to be actively ready to adjust their game mid-round. The elements can make even the most straightforward shots more difficult, and the courseâs length and shape demand accuracy more than just power.
Bottom line? Royal Portrush is a stunnerâplenty of diverse elevation changes, firm fairways, and tricky bunkers. Looking back at 2019, some of the top finishers showed how important solid ball-striking and smart shot selection are here. Shots into the greens, especially on approach, will be critical again, with the course testing every aspect of a player's game. Veterans and consistent ball-strikers often do well at Royal Portrush â and with forecasted conditions and the courseâs natural demands, expect that trend to continue this year.

Weather & Tee Times â
For anyone new to PGA DFS, we take a look at the weather to see if there is an advantage for golfers either teeing up Thursday morning/Friday afternoon (AM/PM wave) or for the guys starting their rounds Thursday afternoon/Friday morning (PM/AM wave). Your top priority in PGA DFS is to get 6-out-of-6 golfers in your lineups through the cut line and into the weekend â from there, anything can happen! If there is an edge to be had for either wave, it is important to take advantage!ďťż

Classic Open conditions on deck â breezy, wet, and very changeable. As of now, it looks as if Thursday AM starts playable but gets gusty (~30 mph) late morning with rain possible. Thursday PM looks worse on paper with stronger winds and higher rain potential, though things might calm a bit late.
Friday fips to a windier morning (15 mph sustained, 20+ mph gusts) but a calmer afternoon, with rain more likely late afternoon/early evening.
âď¸Weather Verdict: If youâre thinking of wave stacking, the Thursday AM / Friday PM wave should avoid peak winds, with Friday PM being the most forgiving stretch of weather over the first two rounds. But this forecast could easily change as this is a coastal links course in Northern Ireland, after all.
Key Stats to Consider đ
Each key stat is paired with a weighted percentage (based on stat importance) for DFS model purposes.
Note: Keep in mind that many golfers in this weekâs field do not have enough (or any) measured PGA rounds this season needed to qualify for strokes gained data.
1. Strokes Gained: Approach | 25%
2. Birdie or Better % | 20%
3. Par 4 Average | 15%
4. Par 5 Average | 10%
5. Good Drive % | 10%
6. Strokes Gained: Off the Tee | 10%
7. Strokes Gained: Around the Green | 10%
The Open Championship DFS Model Standouts đ
Below are the top 25 ranked golfers in both my overall model and my key stats model. Below that are the top 25 leaders in average finishing position over the last five and last ten starts. The players ranked on these lists do not necessarily mean they are the top golfers Iâm targeting for this week's event, but many of these guys should no doubt be favorable DFS options.
Overall Model Rank: A golferâs ranking (within the current field) in my personal DFS model, which weighs all of the key stats listed above in this newsletter, as well as factors like course history, recent form, recent average fantasy scoring results, and odds to win.
Key Stat Rank: Provides a golferâs overall rank (within the current field) in my "key stats only" model, which considers only the key stats listed in the section above with the specified percentage weights allocated towards each statistic.
Reminder: LIV & DPWT golfers are not included in the âOverall Modelâ and âKey Statsâ rankings as they do not qualify for PGA data. However, LIV golfers will be included in the recent/long-term form rankings (based on recent PGA/Major starts).
