Tournament & Field 🏆

The PGA Tour sets its sights towards the middle of the Atlantic where the island country of Bermuda will host the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course. Until the calendar flips over to 2024, these “FedEx Cup Fall Series” events will continue to host some weak fields as guys try to improve their positioning or simply qualify for the upcoming official PGA season beginning in January.

In this field consisting of 132 players, only 11 of the world’s top 100 ranked golfers will be on-site with Lucas Glover (OWGR No. 30) representing the highest-ranked player.

Still, if you’re looking to play PGA DFS once the real high-profile events come around in 2024, this will be another good week to get familiar with the lower-profile golfers on Tour or some up-and-coming PGA talent that will eventually compete in those more coveted tournaments.

The standard cut line is in effect with the top 65 golfers (including ties) on the leaderboard after 36 holes moving on to play the weekend.

Feel free to get a bit riskier with your player pool this week, as ‘anything goes’ in these sorts of lesser-talented events. Also, as I’ve said in recent weeks, I’d recommend going pretty light on the ol’ bankroll until we reach the 2024 season. Nonetheless, there are still contests to win and money to be made this week! Best of luck!

The Course Preview

Port Royal Golf Course

Par 71 | 6,828 Yards

Greens: Bermuda

First Tee: Thursday, November 9th at 5:50 am ET

Port Royal Golf Course is a Par 71 ocean-side track (three Par 5s, four Par 3s) which modestly extends just over 6,800 yards, making it one of the shorter courses on the PGA Tour. This is only the fifth year this course has hosted this tournament, so course history may not be extensive but multiple years of success here is certainly a plus for any golfer. This is also a resort course, so we can expect some low scores as long as conditions are favorable. Brandon Todd won with a score of 24-under in 2019 when conditions were ideal and, under much windier conditions, Lucas Herbert won here in 2021 with a score of 15-under. Only the second round in last year’s Bermuda Championship had consistently high winds, which led to a 19-under winning score from Seamus Power. This course has ranked as the 27th, 17th, 19th, and 28th most difficult course over the last four years and has featured a cut line of -5 (2022), +1 (2021), +2 (2020), and -1 (2019).

Scoring will largely be weather-dependent since wind is the primary course defense at Port Royal GC – more on that in the weather section below. Off the tee, golfers will see plenty of notable elevation changes as they aim toward fairways that are average in width, but difficult to hit, and possess bunkers designed to protect the preferred landing zones. Water will also come into play on a handful of holes. Many golfers will also likely elect to go with a less-than-driver approach on certain holes, but even tee shots that miss the short grass won’t land in rough that is all too penalizing. The Bermuda grass greens are smaller in size but, again, since this is a resort course they should play relatively slow and won’t carry a vast amount of slope or undulation.

Weather & Tee Times

For anyone new to PGA DFS, we take a look at the weather to see if there is an advantage for golfers either teeing up Thursday morning/Friday afternoon (AM/PM wave) or for the guys starting their rounds Thursday afternoon/Friday morning (PM/AM wave). Your top priority in PGA DFS is to get 6-out-of-6 golfers in your lineups through the cut line and into the weekend – from there, anything can happen! If there is an edge to be had for either wave, it is important to take advantage!

(Click the image above to view the most up-to-date forecast)

Thursday: Winds around 10 mph in the morning hours with slightly strong gusts. Down to around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Friday: 12-15 mph winds all day, slightly more favorable in the morning.

Weekend: Winds pick up to around 15 mph for both weekend rounds, with gusts upwards of 20 mph at times on Saturday.

⚖️Weather Verdict: The most favorable wind conditions will come before the cut line is decided so there isn’t too much need to worry about any wave advantage. That said if we’re really splitting hairs, the PM/AM wave should see the most favorable winds on both Thursday and Friday. Use it as a tiebreaker between two similarly-priced golfers you’re deciding between who are in separate waves as opposed to a central focus in your DFS approach this week.
