Tournament & Field 🏆

For the first time since 1963, the PGA Tour will return to the state of Utah! The inaugural edition of the Black Desert Championship will take place at Black Desert Resort in Ivins, Utah. This will be the third FedEx Cup Fall Series event and, once again, this is a weaker field with just 19 of the top 100 ranked golfers in the world in attendance, headlined by world No. 41 Chris Kirk as the highest-ranking player in the field. There are 130+ golfers on-site and the standard cut rule remains in play -- the top 65 golfers (incl. ties) after two rounds will advance into the weekend.

The Course Preview

Black Desert Resort

Par 71 | 7,371 Yards

Greens: Bentgrass

First Tee & DFS Lineup Lock: Thursday, October 10th at 9:40 am ET/7:40 am MDT (local)

As mentioned in the intro, Black Desert Resort is a new addition to the PGA Tour, offering a Par 71 layout that extends over 7,300 yards. This Tom Weiskopf design (the final before his passing), is set in a striking lava field and sits about 3,000 feet above sea level, meaning the thinner air could marginally enhance ball flight and lead to the course playing shorter than its scorecard length. Despite its desert setting, the course doesn’t feature extreme elevation changes, and the wide, rolling fairways (around 30 yards wide) will invite aggressive play off the tee. With minimal rough and a wide-open desert landscape, most players will be hitting drivers on the par 4s and 5s without much penalty.

While the course is long, it shouldn’t play too tough for the pros, but the real test will be on approach shots. The large Bentgrass greens demand precision, especially from mid-to-long irons. Like Weiskopf's other PGA designs—TPC Craig Ranch and TPC Scottsdale—strokes gained on approach, particularly from 150-200 yards, are expected to be an important shot bucket for success. Recent tournaments at those courses have shown that players who excel with their irons can outperform those relying solely on driving distance.

The course offers a few exciting risk-reward opportunities, like the drivable Par 4 14th and the closing Par 5, where players can take aggressive lines off the tee. Its desert location and Bentgrass greens also provide similarities to TPC Summerlin, so golfers who have thrived there may find themselves in contention this week. Overall, Black Desert should challenge players to be sharp with their irons and smart with their strategy, but it won’t be overly punishing off the tee and we can expect resort-style scoring (meaning plenty of low scores). Expect approach play and proximity to the hole to be the decisive factors this week.

Weather & Tee Times

For anyone new to PGA DFS, we take a look at the weather to see if there is an advantage for golfers either teeing up Thursday morning/Friday afternoon (AM/PM wave) or for the guys starting their rounds Thursday afternoon/Friday morning (PM/AM wave). Your top priority in PGA DFS is to get 6-out-of-6 golfers in your lineups through the cut line and into the weekend – from there, anything can happen! If there is an edge to be had for either wave, it is important to take advantage!

⚖️Weather Verdict: I’m not seeing much of an advantage for either wave this week. Winds do pick up around 3 pm both days, so neither wave will completely avoid the windier afternoons.

Black Desert Championship DFS Model Standouts 🏅

Below are the top 25 ranked golfers in both my overall model and my key stats model. Below that are the top 25 leaders in average finishing position over the last five and last ten starts. The players ranked on these lists do not necessarily mean they are the top golfers I’m targeting for this week's event, but many of these guys should no doubt be favorable DFS options.

Overall Model Rank: A golfer’s ranking (within the current field) in my personal DFS model, which weighs all of the key stats listed above in this newsletter, as well as factors like course history, recent form, recent average fantasy scoring results, and odds to win.

Key Stat Rank: Provides a golfer’s overall rank (within the current field) in my "key stats only" model, which considers only the key stats listed in the section above with the specified percentage weights allocated towards each statistic.
