PGA DFS Guide + DraftKings & FanDuel Cheat Sheet | The CJ Cup in South Carolina ⛳

An elite PGA field is set to tee it up for The CJ Cup in South Carolina this week! We'll get you set up with all you need to know for this tournament!

Tournament & Field 🏆

The PGA Tour travels out to the Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, SC for The CJ Cup in South Carolina. This course made its inaugural appearance on the PGA Tour last season, then dubbed the Palmetto Championship at Congaree. The CJ Cup is an event that rotates courses regularly, and this will be the fifth CJ Cup venue in five years. Due to pandemic scheduling issues, the Palmetto Championship in 2021 was a bit hastily put together as it went from an idea to reality in right around three months. Now that they’ve had a full year to prepare for the CJ Cup, this should be a more polished tournament overall. We’re looking at an extremely talented field. There are 15 of the world’s top 20 ranked golfers teeing it up this week, and 55 of the top 100. This tournament always features a smaller field, with 78 golfers on site this week, and there will be no cut. It should be fun to watch many of the world’s top golfers duke it out in a stroke-play event for the first time in a while!

Quick note: I’ll be making some changes to the PGA newsletter for the time being -- possibly permanently if people are receptive to it. The main change will be replacing individual golfer highlights with a global cheat sheet for both DraftKings and FanDuel.

The Course Preview ⛳

Congaree GC was designed by the famous course architect Tom Fazio (Quail Hollow, Pinehurst No. 6 and No. 8, Caves Valley, Shadow Creek) in 2017. This is a Par 71 set-up that extends 7,655 yards in length making it the longest Par 71 on the PGA Tour. The length of this course may seem a bit foreboding at first glance, but Congaree GC can play firm and fast which helps with distance. You’ll get a bit of an Australian or desert feel from this course as the wide tree-lined fairways are surrounded by many native sandy areas and very little rough. Unless this changed from last year, one thing that is fairly unique to this course is the rule that golfers will be allowed to ground their clubs and take practice swings if they find themselves in one of those sandy areas. Water will also come into play on ten of the 18 holes.

On approach shots, golfers will be targeting large Bermuda grass greens with notable undulation and runoff areas which can feed into more surrounding sandy native areas. In general, I believe any type of golfer can find success here and last year’s leaderboard at the Palmetto Championship had a good mix of shorter and longer hitters. Bombers will have plenty of opportunities to swing away with their drivers and as long as the shorter hitters maintain sharp long iron play, they can find success as well. Garrick Higgo won on this course with a score of 11-under last season. Weather conditions are looking to be more ideal this year and the amount of high-end talent teeing up this week could likely push the winning score into the 15-under range or lower.

Weather & Tee Times ⛅

For anyone new to PGA DFS, we take a look at the weather to see if there is an advantage for golfers either teeing up Thursday morning/Friday afternoon (AM/PM wave) or for the guys starting their rounds Thursday afternoon/Friday morning (PM/AM wave). Your top priority in PGA DFS is to get 6-out-of-6 golfers in your lineups through the cut line and into the weekend – from there, anything can happen! If there is an edge to be had for either wave, it is important to take advantage!

Weather Verdict: Golfers will enjoy some excellent fall conditions this week. No rain or problematic winds are expected at any point this week.
