Tournament & Field 🏆

The PGA Tour will prepare for a challenging week of golf as players travel out to Dublin, Ohio to compete in the Memorial Tournament hosted by the iconic Muirfield Village Golf Club. This event annually plays host to an extremely high level of competition, as the world’s best show up in droves to honor one of the game’s all-time greats, Jack Nicklaus, at his home self-designed course. That will be true once again as this event garners Signature Event status, meaning there is a considerably larger purse and additional FedEx Cup points up for grabs. Due to the elevated status, this event will feature a smaller field of just 73 players, but 43 of the top 50 ranked golfers will be in attendance. Only two golfers in this field rank lower than 136th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Unlike most other Signature Events, there will be a 36-hole cut line this week. The top 50 golfers (including ties) on the leaderboard will advance into weekend play -- any players within 10 shots of the lead after two rounds will also make it past the cut line, if applicable. We sit one week out from golf’s next Major, the U.S. Open hosted by Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. That makes this the final week for golfers to fine-tune their game ahead of next week’s prestigious tournament!

The Course Preview

Muirfield Village Golf Club

Welcome to Muirfield Village Golf Club, a masterpiece crafted by the legendary Jack Nicklaus himself. The course has undergone several renovations in recent years and now stretches nearly 7,600 yards. This Par 72 gem offers a formidable challenge to even the most skilled golfers. Muirfield Village GC has consistently tested the mettle of its competitors, ranking among the top 13 most difficult courses on the PGA Tour in each of the previous five seasons.

As golfers navigate the tree-lined fairways, they’ll find some fairly generous landing areas. However, the closer golfers venture towards the greens, the more narrow the fairway layouts become, which will deter the “bomb and gouge” approach. The thick and punishing rough often forces players to opt for a conservative approach off the tee, sacrificing distance in favor of accuracy. A multitude of hazards are strategically positioned throughout the course; with 13 water features and 74 sand traps. Golfers will encounter intimidating hole layouts that demand shots over expansive bodies of water, putting their nerves and precision to the test. As a "second shot" course, the significance of approach shots cannot be overstated. While raw power off the tee is not essential here, precise long-range irons will be. Expect the majority of crucial approach shots to fall within the 175 to 200+ yard range, requiring skillful execution and strategic decision-making. As an effect of recent changes, there has been some added emphasis on proficiency around the green play over the last few years as well.

The bentgrass greens at Muirfield Village add a significant layer of complexity and often determine how difficult the course ultimately plays. These greens are small and undulating and demand precision and finesse. If, or when, the greens become baked out, they’ll run even firmer and faster than they already are which will lead to some very crooked numbers.

With four Par 5s on the course, the potential for birdies and the occasional eagle is there. Adding length to some of the Par 5s has been one of the changes to this course in recent years, so they’re far from pushovers, but those four holes will easily provide the most favorable scoring opportunities. Several of the Par 4s will lead to mayhem and play extremely difficult. Seven of the Par 4s measure in at over 450 yards and simply scoring par on many of those holes will almost feel like a birdie. Of the four Par 3s, three will measure in at 200+ yards and promise to test even the best level talent in this field. Needless to say, golfers who excel in bogey avoidance should be given a strong look this week.

Even under ideal conditions, Muirfield Village Golf Club is a tough track to tame and the course itself draws many comparisons to Augusta National. With its rich history of challenging the world's best golfers, it has established itself as a course that demands nothing short of excellence. Fasten your seatbelts for another top-tier PGA event that will keep us all on the edge of our seats!

Weather & Tee Times

For anyone new to PGA DFS, we take a look at the weather to see if there is an advantage for golfers either teeing up Thursday morning/Friday afternoon (AM/PM wave) or for the guys starting their rounds Thursday afternoon/Friday morning (PM/AM wave). Your top priority in PGA DFS is to get 6-out-of-6 golfers in your lineups through the cut line and into the weekend – from there, anything can happen! If there is an edge to be had for either wave, it is important to take advantage!

(Click the images above to view the most up-to-date forecast)

Thursday AM: Sustained winds around 10 mph with the occasional gust in the 15-20 mph range.

Thursday PM: Sustained winds pick up to 15 mph, gusts up to 20-25 mph.

Friday AM: 10 mph sustained winds to begin the day, strengthening to 20 mph by midday. 25-30 mph gusts.

Friday PM: 20 mph sustained winds with gusts upwards of 30 mph.

Weekend: Both Saturday and Sunday will have more favorable conditions in the mornings, with winds starting off around 10 mph with 15-20 mph gusts. Afternoon winds at 15+ mph and 25+ mph gusts on both days.

⚖️Weather Verdict: Fortunately, there is no rain in the forecast. Unfortunately, golfers will have to contend with windy conditions at different points throughout the week on what is a difficult course to begin with, even in perfect weather conditions. If there is an advantage to be had, I’d say the PM/AM wave gets the slightest of nods, but it’s not significant enough to factor much, if at all, into DFS decision-making.
