Tournament & Field 🏆

Following a decisive win by the Americans in the Presidents Cup (hell yeah, USA!), the FedEx Cup Fall Series resumes with the PGA Tour traveling down south to The Country Club of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship. As we can typically expect in many of these Fall Series events, the field strength is going to be on the weaker side. Only 28 players inside the top 100 of the current Official Golf World Rankings will be in attendance this week with Nick Dunlap (OWGR No. 38) being the highest-ranked golfer in the field. Even without any significant star power on site, this is still a great time of year to get familiarized with some of the lesser-known PGA talent as it can certainly help further down the road! There is plenty at stake for golfers during this time of year with the PGA futures for many players on the line, so these guys should be going all out during these FEC Fall Series events. The field is set at 132 players and the standard cut rule is back in play – the top 65 golfers (including ties) after two rounds will move on to play the weekend. Best of luck!

The Country Club of Jackson is a traditional Par 72 setup that features four Par 3s, four Par 5s, and ten Par 4s. This has been the host course for the Sanderson Farms Championship every year since 2014, so there is some strong, reliable course history to go off of with many of this week’s golfers. The course itself is not overly difficult and a winning score ranging from 16 to 22-under has been achieved every year since 2014.

The mostly tree-lined fairways are about average in width but can feature tight landing zones which are protected by strategically placed bunkers on many holes. As a result, that will require reasonably solid accuracy off of the tee, as the rough here can be a bit penalizing. However, I will say bombers can find success here as well. If guys miss fairways but can routinely hit it 310+ yards and use a wedge out of the rough as they make their shorter approach shots, then that sort of “bomb and gouge” play style can certainly pan out favorably. The green complexes are elevated and fairly wide open, but they do possess a bit of slope and undulation while being protected by bunkers and numerous water hazards. Missing the greens on approach shots can create difficult up-and-downs. The greens themselves are made up of Bermuda grass and will run somewhat fast (around 12 on the stimpmeter), but they should also run pure and carry consistent putting lines. Overall, accurate ball strikers who don’t miss a ton of fairways OR bombers with solid wedge play will reign supreme so long as their putter doesn’t completely fail them. Since this is a Par 72 course, a little extra emphasis should go toward some Par 5 scoring metrics as well.

Weather & Tee Times

For anyone new to PGA DFS, we take a look at the weather to see if there is an advantage for golfers either teeing up Thursday morning/Friday afternoon (AM/PM wave) or for the guys starting their rounds Thursday afternoon/Friday morning (PM/AM wave). Your top priority in PGA DFS is to get 6-out-of-6 golfers in your lineups through the cut line and into the weekend – from there, anything can happen! If there is an edge to be had for either wave, it is important to take advantage!

Thursday: Sustained winds only around 5 mph all day with the occasional 10-15 mph gust in the late morning. Sunny and no chance of rain.

Friday: Winds pick up a hair, compared to Thursday, but sustained speeds should stay under 10 mph all day. The morning hours will feature some 10-15 mph gusts. Partly cloudy and dry.

Weekend: Much of the same. Sustained winds stay under 10 mph with a few 15-ish mph gusts. Low-end chance for rain on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

⚖️Weather Verdict: If you’re really nitpicking, then the AM/PM wave may prove to end up with a very slight advantage since they’ll avoid the Friday morning gusts. But we’re talking about a very minimal edge. I wouldn’t construct my player pool around wave draw, but if you’re on the fence between two golfers and they’re in opposing waves, perhaps side with the AM/PM guy using weather draw as the tiebreaker.
