Tournament & Field 🏆

The Florida Swing has come to a close and the PGA Tour will now travel to the Lone Star State where Memorial Park Golf Course will play host to the Texas Children’s Houston Open. This tournament has gone by different names in the past and has been previously played at a different venue. This event is also being played at a different point in the season and was last played on the PGA circuit in November 2022. The field will consist of 144 golfers with the usual 36-hole cut rule in play -- the top 65 (including ties) after Friday’s round will qualify for the weekend. The isn’t a loaded field, with just 10 of the top 50 ranked golfers in the world teeing it up, and 40 of the top 100. However, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will be on site and he’ll be a massive 3-to-1 favorite to win in his home state of Texas. With the Masters now just two weeks away, this will be one of the final chances for golfers to fine-tune their game, or meet the qualifications, for the first Major of the year!

The Course Preview

Memorial Park Golf Club

Par 70 | 7,412 Yards

Greens: Poa Trivialis Overseed

Memorial Park Golf Club is a lengthy Par 70 setup that will extend 7,412 yards. This course has hosted the previous three iterations of this tournament but before that, it had not made an appearance on the PGA Tour since the ‘60s. Memorial Park GC was redesigned in 2019 by golf course architect Tom Doak with consultation from Brooks Koepka. Course history is obviously lacking, with just three years worth of data available, but given its length as a Par 70, don’t expect this track to be a pushover. Memorial Park GC has ranked as the 13th (2022), 9th (2021), and 12th (2020) most difficult course on the PGA Tour circuit, and the cut line has not gone below even par in any of those three tournaments.

This is a nontraditional Par 70 course as it features five Par 3s and three Par 5s and is one of the longest courses on the PGA Tour. Memorial GC is a parkland-style course (similar to Augusta National GC) with tree-lined fairways that are average in width. There are only 19 bunkers in play and water hazards will affect only four holes. Despite the lack of traditional hazards, other natural hazards lurk around this course which golfers will need to avoid, and winds can always cause some issues as well. The rough shouldn’t be too tall (about 3”), but it can be thick and difficult to play out of in many spots. The overseeded Poa Trivialis greens are large, averaging about 7,000 square feet, and they feature plenty of false fronts and run-offs. Due to the course length, this will likely be a driver-heavy tournament where bombers will have a bit of an advantage. Golfers will also need to be creative and gain strokes around the greens, as they proved difficult to manage in the last couple of years. All in all, expect this Memorial Park GC to provide golfers with a fairly difficult challenge. Only seven golfers have ended the week with scores of 10-under or lower in the three recent editions of this course hosting the Houston Open. We can expect things to play out similarly this week. Any round of 68 or lower is going to be an excellent score here.

Weather & Tee Times

For anyone new to PGA DFS, we take a look at the weather to see if there is an advantage for golfers either teeing up Thursday morning/Friday afternoon (AM/PM wave) or for the guys starting their rounds Thursday afternoon/Friday morning (PM/AM wave). Your top priority in PGA DFS is to get 6-out-of-6 golfers in your lineups through the cut line and into the weekend – from there, anything can happen! If there is an edge to be had for either wave, it is important to take advantage!

(Click the images above to view the most up-to-date forecast)

Thursday: Ideal conditions all day. Plenty of sunshine, pleasant temps, and most importantly, winds will barely exceed 5 mph.

Friday: Calm winds to start the day but things will quickly pick up. By mid-morning, sustained wind speeds will reach 10-15 mph with 20 mph gusts. By the afternoon, 15+ mph sustained winds with similar 20 mph gusts. Clear skies with temps mostly in the mid-70s.

Weekend: 10-15 mph sustained winds for much of the weekend with 20 mph gusts. More cloud coverage is expected but there is no significant threat of rain at this time.

⚖️Weather Verdict: Neither wave will have any issues on Thursday, however, golfers who get out on the course early Friday morning will draw the more favorable overall conditions in the second round. I wouldn’t say it’s a massive advantage, since winds are picking up by mid-Friday morning, but PM/AM golfers will get the better luck of the [weather] draw if the current forecast holds.
