Tournament & Field 🏆

The PGA TOUR heads back to familiar territory this week as Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC once again plays host to the Truist Championship. This event, formerly known as the Wells Fargo Championship, returns to Quail Hollow after a one-year stop at Philadelphia Cricket Club while Quail Hollow prepared to host the 2025 PGA Championship. Now, one of the TOUR’s most recognizable venues is back in its usual spot on the schedule.

As with all Signature Events, this will be a smaller field consisting of 72 golfers, but there is certainly no shortage of talent on site. Scottie Scheffler will sit this one out after another runner-up finish last week, but Rory McIlroy headlines the field as he returns to one of his favorite venues on TOUR. McIlroy has won at Quail Hollow four times in his career and will look to continue building momentum heading into the PGA Championship. Other notable names teeing it up this week include Ludvig Åberg, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa, and last week’s winner Cameron Young. Overall, 44 of the top 60 golfers in the world (via DataGolf) will be teeing it up.

There will once again be no cut in play this week, meaning every golfer in the field is guaranteed four rounds unless they withdraw or are disqualified. While no-cut events are not always the favorite format for DFS players, they do create plenty of viable lineup-building paths and make stars-and-scrubs roster construction far more appealing. Quail Hollow has consistently provided a strong test for the world’s best golfers, and with another Major championship right around the corner, this should be another entertaining week of PGA action. Best of luck!

The Course Preview ⛳

Course Difficulty Ranking L5Years: 3rd*, 6th, 11th, 5th, 8th

*2025 PGA Championship

Quail Hollow Club returns as the host venue for the Truist Championship and remains one of the most demanding non-major tracks golfers will see all season. This George Cobb design, which was renovated by Tom Fazio ahead of the 2017 PGA Championship, stretches beyond 7,600 yards and plays every bit of that length. The Par 71 layout is loaded with difficult Par 4s, as eight of them measure over 450 yards and several stretch beyond 480. Long iron play will be heavily tested throughout the week, especially with three lengthy Par 3s measuring over 190 yards, including the brutally difficult 249-yard 6th hole.

The closing three-hole stretch known as “The Green Mile” remains one of the toughest finishing stretches on TOUR. The 16th and 18th are monster Par 4s that routinely rank among the hardest holes on the course, while the water-guarded 17th Par 3 can completely derail a round in an instant. However, before golfers reach that stretch, Quail Hollow does offer a few aggressive scoring opportunities, particularly on the Par 5s and the drivable 14th hole. Historically, success here has largely come down to capitalizing on those scoring holes while simply surviving many of the demanding Par 4s.

Quail Hollow is a classic Southeastern parkland course featuring tree-lined fairways, thick rough, strategically placed bunkers, water hazards, and numerous doglegs that place a premium on driving ability. While the fairways are not impossibly narrow, positioning off the tee still matters quite a bit due to the angles golfers are forced to attack from into these large, undulating greens. The course tends to reward elite tee-to-green players, particularly golfers who can combine distance with strong long iron play and a high ball flight capable of holding firm greens from extended distances.

In recent years, Quail Hollow has strongly favored elite drivers of the golf ball. Rory McIlroy, Wyndham Clark, and Justin Thomas have all dominated here with power off the tee, and even Scottie Scheffler’s PGA Championship win at Quail Hollow last year was driven by elite ball-striking and precision long iron play. Strokes Gained: Off the Tee tends to matter nearly as much as approach play at this venue, which is somewhat uncommon compared to many other difficult courses on TOUR.

The Bermuda/rye overseeded greens are above average in size and typically run fast, though not outrageously so. Around-the-green play and scrambling should still be factored in, especially with many missed greens expected due to the course length and difficult approach shots. Riviera, TPC Southwind, and Copperhead remain strong course comparisons stylistically, as all three reward complete tee-to-green games and strong long iron play. Ultimately, Quail Hollow is not a venue where mediocre ball-striking can be masked by a hot putter for four straight days. This course tends to identify the best overall players in the field, which should make for another entertaining week of golf.

Weather & Tee Times ⛅

For anyone new to PGA DFS, we take a look at the weather to see if there is an advantage for golfers either teeing up Thursday morning/Friday afternoon (AM/PM wave) or for the guys starting their rounds Thursday afternoon/Friday morning (PM/AM wave). Your top priority in PGA DFS is to get 6-out-of-6 golfers in your lineups through the cut line and into the weekend – from there, anything can happen! If there is an edge to be had for either wave, it is important to take advantage!

⚖️Weather Verdict: The early forecast for the Truist Championship is fairly tame overall, though Thursday morning could get a bit messy. Rain showers and some isolated storms are expected to move through the Charlotte area early Thursday, and there is at least some potential for temporary delays or stoppages in play during the opening round. Winds do not look overly concerning at this point, generally hovering around 5–10 mph with some occasional gusts closer to 15–20 mph early Thursday morning before calming down later in the day. If the rain does arrive as expected, Quail Hollow could play a bit longer and softer than usual early in the tournament, though slower greens may help offset some of the added difficulty. With this being a no-cut Signature Event, wave and tee-time advantages are far less important than usual, and right now the overall weather outlook looks very manageable outside of Thursday morning’s potential rain concerns.
