Tournament & Field 🏆

The PGA Tour returns to the iconic Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC to tee it up for the Wells Fargo Championship. We’re officially one week away from golf’s second Major, the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club; that means golfers will be looking to keep their game in top form or improve it. This year’s edition of the Wells Fargo Championship will serve as a Signature Event. That means a larger purse is up for grabs as well as additional FedEx Cup points. Due to the elevated status, the field will be slimmed down to only 69 players, but it is loaded with talent. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will be taking another week off as he awaits the birth of his first child but, hey, that means somebody else has a chance to win a tournament! Even without Scheffler, the majority of the top golfers in the world will still be on site. In total, 43 of the world’s top 50 ranked golfers will be teeing it up this week, and only five players in the field rank lower than 83rd in the world. Quail Hollow always gives golfers one of the most difficult non-Major challenges of the year and we’ll get to see the best of the best duke it out! Should be a fun week!

The Course Preview

Quail Hollow Club

Par 71 | 7,538 Yards

Greens: Bermuda

Course Difficulty Last 5 Years Played: 11th, 5th, 8th, 5th, 9th

This event switched venues in 2022 while Quail Hollow prepared to host the Presidents Cup but it returned to the PGA Tour circuit to host the Wells Fargo Championship last year. Quail Hollow underwent a significant renovation in 2017 when it played host to the PGA Championship. During the renovation, it was converted from a Par 72 to a Par 71, and some length was added to the point where it now plays at nearly 7,600 yards. This makes it one of the longest courses on the entire PGA circuit. This also makes course history a little murky since we’ve only seen golfers compete on the post-renovated course a few times since this tournament was canceled in 2020 and changed venues in 2022. Nonetheless, expect Quail Hollow to provide a very difficult challenge for golfers competing this week.

The tree-lined fairways at Quail Hollow are average in width but they can be hard to hit with the driver. Last year, the field had an overall fairway accuracy of just 54.3%. There aren’t very many fairway bunkers or water hazards looming, and missing off of the tee isn’t necessarily a death sentence but the two-inch rough is thick and won’t be very easy to play out of either. Still, we can expect most golfers to pound the driver in an effort to battle against Quail Hollow's length. The average driving distance here last season was 303.9 yards -- 12.5 yards above average. Due to the length of the newer layout, a long driver and strength off the tee can be a major plus this week so I’m not against the idea of leaning towards bombers here.

Aside from hitting it long, every golfer will need to do most of their scoring on the course’s three Par 5s – that is a necessity. Players who succeed on the 11 Par 4s by staying close to par on those holes, with the occasional birdie here and there, will be the ones who climb the leaderboard. These greens also run sneaky fast, they are multi-tiered and heavily undulated. Even when faced with shorter approach lengths, there is no guarantee that a decent shot will stick on these greens, so gaining strokes around the green will play a key role in succeeding as well. Over half of approach shots will be coming from 175+ yards out, even for golfers with lengthy drivers, so we should certainly be looking for some premiere long iron players. The most well-known part of Quail Hollow is the three-hole finishing stretch dubbed “The Green Mile” which features three of the four toughest holes on the course. The Green Mile certainly makes for an exciting finish which can cause massive shakeups on the leaderboard. A tough week of golf lies ahead for some of the world’s best players and, to spice things up even more, some windy weather will further emphasize Quail Hollow’s difficulty. This should be a fun one to watch and build lineups for! Best of luck!

Weather & Tee Times

For anyone new to PGA DFS, we take a look at the weather to see if there is an advantage for golfers either teeing up Thursday morning/Friday afternoon (AM/PM wave) or for the guys starting their rounds Thursday afternoon/Friday morning (PM/AM wave). Your top priority in PGA DFS is to get 6-out-of-6 golfers in your lineups through the cut line and into the weekend – from there, anything can happen! If there is an edge to be had for either wave, it is important to take advantage!

Thursday: Rain is possible throughout the day, but nothing that would be overly heavy. Winds will be the big issue as they’ll check in at 10-15 mph sustained all day with 25-30 mph gusts.

Friday: Clearer skies with lighter winds in the early morning, picking up to around 15 mph closer to midday with 20+ mph gusts.

Weekend: No rain is expected over the weekend and, outside of a few gusts, winds will hardly exceed 10 mph.

⚖️Weather Verdict: Since this is a no-cut event with a smaller field and more condensed tee times, weather plays less of a factor as far as finding a potential DFS edge goes. Thursday’s winds will provide the trickiest challenge but, ultimately, every golfer will end up playing in similar conditions across the opening two rounds. No need to sweat any weather advantage this week.
