Tournament & Field 🏆

The PGA Tour heads south of the border this week as the FedEx Cup Fall Series rolls on with the World Wide Technology Championship in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Golfers will tee it up at El Cardonal at Diamante—a Tiger Woods design that joined the PGA TOUR rotation in 2023 and is now hosting for the third time. As is typical for these Fall events, the field strength is on the weaker side, featuring just 23 players ranked inside the DataGolf top 100. The 120-player field will follow the standard 36-hole cut rule, with the top 65 (and ties) advancing to the weekend. While PGA DFS may take a backseat this time of year with football, basketball, and hockey in full swing, there’s still plenty of money to be won—so let’s stay sharp and find an edge! Best of luck!

The Course Preview

El Cardonal at Diamante

Par 72 | 7,452 Yards

Greens: Paspalum

First Tee: Thursday, November 6th at 8:30 am ET (6:30 am local)

2023 Winner: Erik van Rooyen (-27)

2024 Winner: Austin Eckroat (-24)

As mentioned in the intro, this was a completely new course that made its debut on the PGA Tour two years ago. As such, there will be very limited course history to rely on, and around half of this year’s competitors will be playing this course for the first time. El Cardonal at Diamante is the very first venue designed by Tiger Woods and his TGR course design firm, and I’m sure we’ll get some insight from the Big Cat on how golfers should attack this course throughout the week. This will set up as a traditional Par 72 layout, so it will feature four Par 5s and four Par 3s. The Par 5s are rather short and should be reachable in two shots by the majority of golfers. Expect plenty of scoring to come on those four holes. There are a couple of Par 4s that measure in around 345 yards, meaning both of those holes could be “drivable” by some of the bigger hitters in the field.

From a layout perspective, things are very wide open with massive fairways that average 60 yards in width. Bombers who often struggle to land it on narrower fairways won’t have to worry about that problem nearly as much this week. For reference, driving accuracy on this course was at 88.9% a year ago, which is over 30% higher than the PGA Tour average. There is no traditional rough surrounding those wide fairways. Instead, if golfers do manage to miss the fairway, they’ll find themselves in difficult-to-navigate native areas. There are natural hills, mounds, and undulation throughout the course, and some strategically-placed fairway and greenside bunkers that work as a primary course defense and could bring bogey or worse into play.

On approach, golfers will be targeting vast green complexes that average 8,300 square feet. The greens feature coastal paspalum grass, which is a softer, more receptive putting surface that is usually used on courses in hotter climates. Putts should not run overly firm or fast on these large greens. A huge percentage of approach shots should come in the 150-200 yard range. Golfers who tend to throw darts from that shot bucket distance will have a strong advantage.

Overall, this course is a more contemporary version of a links-style course that we often see in open championship venues. Scoring shouldn’t be an issue this week, especially since winds are not expected to be problematic. We have seen both winners of this event score well into the 20-under range, and the cut line will almost certainly be multiple shots under par. Golfers will have free rein to unleash their driver off the tee, and the best overall ball strikers should ultimately prevail. I expect this to be an exciting event with plenty of low scores on the board, and it’ll be interesting to see how these pros attack a Tiger Woods-designed course during its third year on the schedule!

Weather & Tee Times

For anyone new to PGA DFS, we take a look at the weather to see if there is an advantage for golfers either teeing up Thursday morning/Friday afternoon (AM/PM wave) or for the guys starting their rounds Thursday afternoon/Friday morning (PM/AM wave). Your top priority in PGA DFS is to get 6-out-of-6 golfers in your lineups through the cut line and into the weekend – from there, anything can happen! If there is an edge to be had for either wave, it is important to take advantage!

⚖️Weather Verdict: Pretty close to perfect weather this week. We’re looking at mild temps, dry conditions, and light winds under 10mph throughout the tournament. No rain or notable tee-time advantage expected — just ideal scoring conditions from start to finish.

Key Stats to Consider 📊

Each key stat is paired with a weighted percentage (based on stat importance) for DFS model purposes.

2. Birdie or Better % | 25%

3. Par 4 Average | 20%

4. Par 5 Birdie or Better %| 10%

5. Proximity from 150-200 Yards | 10%

6. Strokes Gained: Putting | 5%

WWT Championship DFS Model Standouts 🏅

Below are the top 25 ranked golfers in both my overall model and my key stats model. Below that are the top 25 leaders in average finishing position over the last five and last ten starts. The players ranked on these lists do not necessarily mean they are the top golfers I’m targeting for this week's event, but many of these guys should no doubt be favorable DFS options.

Overall Model Rank: A golfer’s ranking (within the current field) in my personal DFS model, which weighs all of the key stats listed above in this newsletter, as well as factors like course history, recent form, recent average fantasy scoring results, and odds to win.

Key Stat Rank: Provides a golfer’s overall rank (within the current field) in my "key stats only" model, which considers only the key stats listed in the section above with the specified percentage weights allocated towards each statistic.
