The PGA Tour heads south of the border to continue its FedEx Cup Fall Series with the World Wide Technology Championship next up on the schedule! Golfers will prepare to tee it up at El Cardonal at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, which sits on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. This course was brand new to the PGA Tour in 2023 and will now be making its second appearance. As is the case with most of these Fall events, the field strength is fairly weak with world No. 40 Max Greyserman as the highest-ranking golfer teeing it up in Mexico this week. In total, only 18 of the world’s top 100 ranked golfers reside in this 132-player field. The standard 36-hole cut rule will be in effect with the top 65 golfers (including ties) qualifying for the weekend. PGA is on the backburner for many folks this time of year with so many other major sports currently in full swing and these Fall Series events certainly are not loaded with the best of the best talent. But someone has to win these PGA DFS contests! Best of luck if you’re still sticking with it!

El Cardonal at Diamante

As mentioned in the intro, this was a completely new course that made its debut on the PGA Tour last year. As such, there will only be one year of course history to rely on, and around half of this year’s competitors will be playing this course for the first time. El Cardonal at Diamante is the very first venue designed by Tiger Woods and his TGR course design firm and I’m sure we’ll get some insight from the Big Cat on how golfers should attack this course throughout the week. This will set up as a traditional Par 72 layout so it will feature four Par 5s and four Par 3s. The Par 5s are rather short and should be reachable in two shots by the majority of golfers. Expect plenty of scoring to come on those four holes. There are a couple of Par 4s that measure in at 344 and 351 yards, which could be drivable by some of the bigger hitters in the field.

From a layout perspective, things are very wide open with massive fairways that average 60 yards in width. Bombers who often struggle to land it on narrower fairways won’t have to worry about that problem nearly as much this week. There is no traditional rough surrounding those wide fairways. Instead, if golfers manage to miss the fairway, they’ll find themselves in difficult-to-navigate native areas. There are natural hills, mounds, and undulation throughout the course and some strategically-placed fairway and greenside bunkers that work as a primary course defense and could bring bogey or worse into play.

On approach, golfers will be targeting vast green complexes that average 8,300 square feet. The greens feature coastal paspalum grass, which is a softer, more receptive putting surface. Putts should not run overly firm or fast on these large greens. A huge percentage of approach shots should come in the 150-200 yard range. Golfers who tend to throw darts from that shot bucket distance will have a strong advantage. Overall, this course is a more contemporary version of a links-style course that we often see in open championship venues. Scoring shouldn’t be an issue this week, especially since winds are not expected to be problematic. We saw last year’s WWT Championship winner, Erik van Rooyen, fire a 27-under winning score while nine total golfers went 20-under or lower. Golfers will have free reign to unleash their driver off the tee and the best overall ball strikers should ultimately prevail. I expect this to be an exciting event with plenty of low scores on the board and it’ll be interesting to see how these pros attack a Tiger Woods-designed course during its second year on the schedule!

⚖️Weather Verdict: As you can see, conditions look pristine for golfing this week. Gusts do pick up a touch on Thursday afternoon (~15 mph) but that’s about as intense as it gets. If you want to give the slightest (and I mean super slight) advantage to AM/PM golfers, feel free, but the weather should really have no significant impact on DFS decision-making this week.
